Biography

Bilingual flutist Ashley Alarcon currently serves as Educational Outreach Manager for the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, is a member of the Treasure Coast Flute Choir, and is honored to be joining the Stuart School of Music family. Ms. Alarcon was born and raised in Mexico City to a Mexican-American musical family and holds a Masters in Music in Flute Performance from University of New Mexico where she studied under the guidance of flute professor Valerie Potter. During her Masters education, Ms. Alarcon was awarded the Graduate Woodwind Quintet Flute Assistantship, chaired principal flute in the UNM Symphony Orchestra, UNM Wind Symphony, and New Music New Mexico ensembles, and was the first prize winner of the 2014 UNM Concerto Competition. As a soloist, Ms. Alarcon has appeared with the UNM Symphony Orchestra (2014), the Principia College Orchestra (2012), the New England Youth Ensemble in Mexico City (2010), Principia Upper School Band Concert (2010), and the St. Louis Children’s Choir (2008).

 

Ms. Alarcon currently studies flute under Takeaki Miyamae, Flute Professor of the International Academy of the Suzuki Method in Japan and Levine Music School in Washington, D.C. Her main flute teachers include Dr. Marie Jureit-Beamish, Emeriti Professor of Music at Principia College; Anibal Robles, principal flutist in Mexico City’s Opera House; Asako Arai, flutist of Mexico City’s Woodwind Quintet; Judy Johanson, principal flutist in Mexico City’s Philharmonic; and Ms. Maggie McCallie, Early Childhood/Lower School Music Teacher at Principia School. 

 

Ms. Alarcon has been the recipient of a number of music scholarships and awards which include the University of New Mexico Graduate Band Scholarship, Graduate Woodwind Quintet Assistantship, as well as Principia College Founders’ Scholarship, Ralph Colby, Jr. Award, The Marie and J. Calvin Jureit College Endowed Music Fund, Marion L. Ackley Music Award, Mildred B Frame Endowed Music Scholarship Grant, John Philip Sousa Band Award and the Global Diversity Award.

 

As an international musician, Ms. Alarcon has played under the baton of famous conductors including David Robertson, Ward Stare, János Kovács, and Silvano Mangiapelo. She has also toured around the USA as a selected member of the Principia College 2012 and 2014 Spring Arts Tours, enabling her to perform in venues such as the Steinway & Sons Hall in New York City.
